Bristol Paediatric ECMC is located at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) in the city centre. The hospital, a dedicated children’s hospital, was first opened on the 22/04/2001 and was the first purpose-built children's Hospital in the South West. Children with cancers up to age 16 years are treated at BRHC. Teenagers and young adults (TYA) of age 16-25 years are treated at the Teenage and Young Adult Unit, Area 61, at the Bristol Oncology and Haematology Centre. BRHC and Area 61 together serve as a Principal Treatment Centre for new cancer referrals in South West England. BRHC also works closely with smaller units within the South West Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Network on cancer care and clinical trial management. We accepts referrals for early phase trial participation as well as for bone marrow/stem cell transplantation from other centres in the UK.
Who we are:
The Bristol Paediatric ECMC is part of the national Paediatric ECMC Network and is an accredited early phase clinical trials centre of the European Network Innovative Therapies for Children with Cancer (ITCC). BRHC has a dedicated and established medical and research team with 11 consultant paediatric haematologists, oncologists, bone marrow transplantation specialists, 3 research nurses, 2 oncology pharmacists, 3 data managers and a trial coordinator. All staff are experienced and actively involved in many national & international clinical trials including early-phase, phase 3 treatment, translational research, pharmacokinetic/pharmacology studies in solid tumours, leukaemia, bone marrow/stem cell transplantation, and benign haematology.
Our facilities:
The Paediatric ECMC site has dedicated facilities including day case/outpatient unit, inpatient beds, as well as intensive care/ high-dependency areas to meet the potential needs of cancer patients on treatment and clinical trials. The expanding trial portfolio also encompasses established experience working with pharma companies. Bristol Paediatric Cancer Unit & ECMC has close working relationship with Birmingham's Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit.
Our patient population:
There are about 5.6 million people in South West England (about 1.2 million are up to 15 years). There are about 140 patients up to the age of 16 with a new cancer diagnosis in the South West that receive cancer treatment in the paediatric site, with 46 patients with recurrent / refractory disease that require additional treatment, including participation to early phase studies.
(Note: the above figures did not include additional TYA population with cancer, patients referred from other centres for bone marrow/ stem cell transplantation or for consideration of access to relevant clinical trials).
