Belfast adult centre

This centre was Ireland’s first early phase trials unit and drives translational and clinical research in experimental cancer medicine through national, international and commercial partnerships.

Centre overview

Our Belfast adult experimental cancer medicine centre (ECMC) works closely with the Johnston Cancer Research Centre, Queen's University Belfast, the Northern Ireland Cancer Trials Network and the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

Partners also include the Northern Ireland Biobank and the Precision Medicine Centre of Excellence. In addition, they run a clinical doctoral training fellowship programme with the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto.

The centre specialises in precision medicine and genomic biomarker development. It offers Good Laboratory Practice-standard facilities in genomics, bioinformatics, imaging and pathology.

Vicky Coyle - Centre co-lead, clinical

Vicky Coyle is a Professor of Medical Oncology and Honorary Consultant Medical Oncologist in the Belfast Trust. Her clinical practice focuses on colorectal cancer and early-phase cancer clinical trials. She has an interest in translational and clinical research in colorectal cancer, focusing on mechanisms of treatment response and resistance.

Kienan Savage - Centre co-lead, scientific

Kienan Savage is Professor of Molecular Oncology, Deputy Director of the Johnston Cancer Research Centre and an Academic Lead within the Northern Ireland Future Medicine Institute. Kienan leads a research group focused on understanding cellular DNA damage response and repair systems, focused on how defects in these pathways contribute to cancer development, progression and treatment response.

Melanie Morris - Centre business lead

Melanie Morris is Operational Director of Cancer Trials at the Belfast City Hospital and has over 30 years’ experience in clinical research across the academic and commercial sectors. She currently oversees a multidisciplinary team supporting the design, set-up and delivery of cancer clinical trials across Northern Ireland. Melanis is the co-chair of the ECMC Trial Operational Delivery Form.

Ruth Boyd - Patient and public involvement lead

Ruth Boyd is a Cancer Research UK Senior Research Nurse at Belfast City Hospital. Ruth helped to establish the NI Cancer Research Consumer Forum (NICRCF), a group of over 60 patients and carers affected by cancer. The NICRCF have been instrumental in embedding patient and public involvement in research and increasing outreach. Ruth is also a member of the ECMC Research Nurse steering committee.
