This centre brings strong expertise in solid tumours and haematological malignancies. It delivers biomarker-driven trials supported by novel trial design, stratified medicine and drug development.
Centre overview
Our Cardiff adult experimental cancer medicine centre (ECMC) is integrated with Wales’ cancer research strategy and collaborates with the UK Clinical Research Collaboration-registered Centre for Trials Research, Wales Cancer Bank and Medicines Discovery Unit.
National and international research at this centre is supported by world-class imaging facilities at the Wales Research and Diagnostic Positron Emission Tomography Imaging Centre and the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre.
The Cardiff ECMC coordinates the ECMC haematology network and funds research nurses for early phase trials in both haematology and solid tumours.
There is also a paediatric centre in Cardiff.

Rob Jones - Centre co-lead
Rob Jones is a Professor of Medical Oncology and Associate Medical Director of Research, Development and Innovation at Velindre University NHS Trust. He set up Wales' only cancer phase 1 trials unit and opened its first first-in-human trial, and has been principal investigator of over 50 early phase trials and chief investigator on two investigator-led national portfolio trials.

Steve Knapper - Centre co-lead
Steve Knapper is a Professor at Cardiff University and honorary Consultant Haematologist at the University Hospital of Wales. His research focuses on targeted therapies in myeloid malignancies, translational research and trials. He chairs the ECMC Haematology Network, deputy chair of the UK Acute Myeloid Leukaemia Research Network and the UK Trials Acceleration Programme deputy medical director.

Angela Harris - Centre business lead / Patient and public involvement lead
Angela has worked at the Cardiff ECMC for five years, bringing with her a strong background in arts public engagement. Her experience has played a key role in shaping and developing the centre’s patient and public involvement strategy, creating innovative and meaningful ways for the public to connect with and contribute to research.
