Centre overview
Our Manchester adult experimental cancer medicine centre (ECMC) works collaboratively with the NIHR Clinical Research Facility at The Christie Hospital, the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute and the University of Manchester.
The centre is renowned for molecular profiling, biobanking, imaging, biomarker discovery and radiotherapy research. It also has strong programmes in prevention and early detection, including both adult and paediatric activity.
Manchester ECMC is also committed to improving widespread patient access to early-phase clinical trials.
There is also a paediatric centre in Manchester.

Natalie Cook - Centre co-lead
Natalie Cook is a Medical Oncologist and Senior Clinical Lecturer at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust/University of Manchester. She is a Principal or Chief Investigator on over 20 trials and has research interests in cancer of unknown primary, and is also interested in clinical trial design, biomarker development and patient experience on clinical trials.

Tim Somervaille - Centre co-lead
Tim Somervaille is an Honorary Consultant Haematologist at The Christie, interested in myeloid malignancies including myelofibrosis, polycythaemia vera and essential thrombocythaemia. He is also Senior Group Leader at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, where his team investigates the biology of myeloid cancers, with a focus on identifying and developing new treatments for leukaemia.

Amanda Rees - Centre business lead
Amanda Rees is the Centre Business Lead at Manchester ECMC and Head of Research Operations for the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team at The Christie. Amanda works across the multidisciplinary team to support the development and operational delivery of a large academic and commercial portfolio of early phase trials.

Amy Smith - Patient and public involvement co-lead
Amy Smith is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. Amy provides support to patients participating in early phase oncology clinical trials, as well as their families and carers. Amy is an advocate for patients, ensuring they and their families are appropriately involved and empowered in research and all aspects of their care.

Sayema Khan - Patient and public involvement co-lead
Sayema Rahman Khan is a Research Project Manager in the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. Sayema is passionate about advancing inclusivity in clinical research and champions for the integration of underrepresented, underserved and diverse voices to address health inequities.
