Birmingham paediatric centre

This centre is based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and delivers specialist early-phase cancer trials for children and young people aged 0–16.

Centre overview

Our Birmingham paediatric experimental cancer medicine centre (ECMC) serves as the hub of the Midlands Paediatric Oncology Shared Care network. It is both a Principal Treatment Centre and accredited by the Innovative Therapies for Children and Adolescents with Cancer (ITTC) as one of the five first-in-child study centres.

The centre has a long‑standing research track record and an extensive early-phase and translational phase 1/2 clinical trial portfolio. It’s underpinned by strong academic links with the University of Birmingham with access to a broad paediatric patient population and a recognised excellence in patient engagement and recruitment.

There is also an adult centre in Birmingham.

Professor Amos Burke.

Amos Burke - Centre co-lead

Amos Burke is Professor of Paediatric Oncology at the University of Birmingham, an Honorary Consultant Paediatric Oncologist at Birmingham, Women and Children’s Hospital and Director of Cancer Research UK's Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). He oversees the CTU's research strategy, delivering a trial portfolio covering a wide range of cancers across all age groups.

Dr Susanne Gatz.

Susanne Gatz - Centre co-lead

Dr Susanne Gatz is a clinician scientist combining clinical expertise in solid tumours with translational research expertise in DNA repair and sarcoma to identify better treatments for children with cancer. She is involved in the paediatric cancer trial portfolio at Cancer Research UK's Birmingham CTU and the paediatric stratified medicine programme and molecular profiling initiatives.

Jane Cooper - Senior research nurse

​​Jane Cooper has been an oncology research nurse for 22 years and previously worked on the oncology ward before that. She has extensive experience in the running and management of early-phase trials as well as all other aspects of clinical trials and studies within the portfolio.​
