Manchester paediatric centre
This centre is based at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and is the lead centre for our national paediatric network.
Centre overview
Our Manchester paediatric experimental cancer medicine centre (ECMC) is based at one of the largest children’s hospitals in the UK. The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital is a major stem cell transplant centre for malignant and inherited metabolic disease and has a clinical and research team experienced in delivering advanced cellular therapies including CAR T trials.
This is an Innovative Therapies for Children with Cancer European Consortium (ITCC) accredited first-in-child centre. It delivers paediatric haematology and oncology services across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, South Cumbria, North Cheshire and surrounding regions.
The Manchester paediatric ECMC has significant expertise in early-phase, translational and pharmacology studies. The centre has a highly experienced research nurse team, leading on clinical trial delivery and national tissue banking, and is supported by a comprehensive early-phase infrastructure. This includes a research active stem cell transplant unit and on site clinical trials pharmacy.
It also has strong academic links with the University of Manchester and collaborates closely with our ECMCs in Leeds and Liverpool to ensure broad early-phase trial access across the North.
There is also an adult centre in Manchester, housed by The Christie Hospital which is one of two UK proton beam centres. The Christie Hospital delivers proton beam therapy to children with cancer from across the UK in collaboration with the children’s oncology service at The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
